The valence and conduction band electron states in solids determine the properties of the materials. Depending on the bandstructure a material can be a conductor or an insulator, have a specific colour, shows magnetics properties etc. The quantum mechanical wavefunctions of the electrons in a periodic potential displays an energy dependence (dispersion) depending of the degree of overlap of the atomic constituents and the symmetry of the atomic arrangement in the solid. ARPES is a method to determine the relation of electron momentum (vector) and energy and is therefore a powerful tool in examining the intrinsic characteristics for electron conductivity, electron mobility, magnetism etc.
