Reflection High Energy Electron Diffraction
In a reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) experiment one can obtain information about the crystallinity of a given surface. A beam of electrons with high kinetic energies (in the range of several 101 keV) is directed onto a specimen, hitting the samples surfaces under grazing incidence. Besides specular reflection, the electrons can be subject to diffraction on a periodic surface lattice, giving rise to preferred exit trajectories of the electrons from the surface. These trajectories are visualised as discrete intensity patterns of a phosphorescent screen in the experimental setup.
