3D Spin VLEED

Resolving In- and Out-of-Plane Electron Spin with DA30-L

PES VLEED

  • Proven technology – DA30 deflection mode for full cone ARPES and VLEED spin detection
  • Fixed transfer system with two orthogonal VLEED detectors
  • Easy VLEED target preparation without transfer / realignment
  • Market leading Sherman function and reflectivity
  • Strictly non-magnetic transfer lens

The 3D Spin VLEED utilises the exchange scattering mechanisms to be 50x more efficient than Mott schemes. It is equipped with Ferrum VLEED detectors which mount on a proprietary transfer lens with high speed switching between channels. The DA30-L's unique deflection mode directs any part the full acceptance cone to the spin detectors without sample rotation for detection of in-plane and out-of-plane spin vectors.

The 3D VLEED Spin detector allows resolving the out-of-plane as well as both in-plane spin components. The three spin vector directions are all defined by the geometry in the instrument and without the use of magnetic fields. In each Ferrum VLEED detector from Focus GmbH the target magnetisation gives two orthogonal directions. For the 3D version, two Ferrum detectors are mounted in orthogonal geometry. This ensures that the measured spin vectors are truly orthogonal.

Combining with DA30-L

Successful spin measurements require high-quality ARPES measurements to verify sample properties and ensure critical sample alignment. ARPES data is collected with the DA30-L 40mm MCP detector included in the VLEED detector system. Furthermore, to increase speed, precision, and keeping the geometry constant throughout the experiment it is beneficial to avoid sample movements when switching from ARPES to spin-resolved measurements. With the DA30-L's unique capability to quickly scan both θx and θy, while providing the highest energy resolution, sample and lens movements are eliminated and spin-resolved spectra can be collected for all points in k-space of the ARPES measurement. Integrating the Ferrum and the DA30-L creates the highest quality and most efficient spin ARPES measurements.

VLEED Detector Technology

The Ferrum detector is a setup based on VLEED scattering for resolving the spin components of electrons. The scattering Fe-film target is prepared in situ with easy handling of W-substrate preparation, Fe-film evaporation, and oxygen dosing. No transfer/realignment of the target is required for regeneration. Successfully prepared, the Fe-scattering film lifetime can reach weeks. This detector is integrated to the DA30-L through a transfer lens.

2D Spin VLEED

The Spin VLEED is available as 2D version which provides detection of two spin vectors, one in-plane and one out-of-plane vector. The 2D Spin VLEED can easily be upgraded at customer site to the 3D Spin VLEED by addition of a second Ferrum detector.
